Event Description
After the pre-selection, where the representatives of the MT180 and 3MT competitions will have been chosen by a jury, selection of the UdeM representative for the national final will take place on March 14, 2025 at 1:30 PM at UdeM. Presentations will be web-broadcast on UdeM's YouTube Channel.
The purpose of this competition is to encourage graduate students to develop their communication skills and diffuse their research to a larger audience. Students will have precisely three minutes to make, in English, a convincing presentation of their thesis topic, in a language suitable for an educated but non-specialist audience. Participants are not allowed to use props or demonstrations. Only a single static (no animation of any sort) PowerPoint slide is permitted during the oration. Please consult: https://threeminutethesis.uq.edu.au/resources/competition-rules.
Winner selection and online vote
The winner of the Université de Montréal competition will be selected by a jury composed of academics from UdeM. The audience (in person and online via UdeM’s YouTube Channel) will be invited to vote for the People’s Choice award. The results will be announced immediately after the jury's deliberations and after the compilation of the public votes.
Prizes
- First Prize - Jury’s Choice Award: $500
- Second Prize - Jury's Choice Award: $250
- People’s Choice Award: $250 (only one prize amongst all participants of the two competitions, MT180 and 3MT)
Video recording
All presentations will be recorded on video. After the competition, each participant can receive a video file of his/her performance, on demand. Only the winner’s video will be published on the ESP’s (GPS) website and on his/her home faculty website eventually.
Dress code
Without being an official criterion of the Competition rules, it is strongly recommended that participants wear appropriate attire (for example, jeans with holes, worn out t-shirts, stained clothes, etc. should be avoided). Remember that the winner of the competition will be designated as Université de Montréal’s representative for the regional competition.
Schedule
It is important that students who have been selected for participating in the competition respect the schedule on the day of the event in order not to delay the group of other participants. The detailed instructions regarding the event schedule will be explained to participants only once, 30 minutes prior to the start of the competition.
