The first eligibility requirement for a Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies scholarship, regardless of the sponsor, is full-time enrolment in a graduate program. Scholarships are awarded to students with an excellent academic record.

Fonds de bourses du Fonds de solidarité FTQ
The Fonds de solidarité FTQ scholarship fund helps Université de Montréal fulfill its teaching and research mission by awarding one or more $2,500 scholarships to Canadian citizens enrolled in a graduate program. These scholarships are awarded annually, alternating between Université de Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal. Recipients must have a strong academic record and demonstrate a need for financial support to continue their studies.
Fonds de bourses J.A. DeSève
The J.A. DeSève scholarship fund awards annual scholarships to deserving students enrolled in graduate research programs at Université de Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal. The scholarships are merit-based, according to the policies of the three institutions. Applications must include a transcript, a letter of recommendation from a professor and a letter of support from another professor who has known the student during their studies and can attest to their personal qualities.

The Louise and Bernard Lamarre scholarship fund supports Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission by awarding annual scholarships of $2,000 to students entering a master’s program at UdeM. Applicants must be enrolled full-time and have an excellent academic record. The number of scholarships awarded depends on available funds.

The RBC Financial Group scholarship fund supports Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission by awarding scholarships to students enrolled full-time in a master’s program at UdeM. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have an excellent academic record. The annual scholarships are worth $5,000 and are renewable. The number of scholarships awarded depends on available funds.

Fonds du Club Saint-Denis
The Club Saint-Denis scholarship fund supports HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and Université de Montréal in carrying out teaching and research activities, thereby serving the needs of the university community and society as a whole. It funds merit-based scholarships for graduate students at HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and Université de Montréal (20%, 20% and 60% respectively).
Bourses du groupe financier Banque TD
TD Bank Financial Group scholarships help students succeed in their post-secondary studies. Students who need financial assistance, reside in a Canadian province or territory and qualify for the Canadian resident tuition fee structure are eligible. The maximum amount is $5,000, or half of tuition fees.
Fonds et bourses de la Banque de Montréal
The Bank of Montreal scholarship fund supports Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission by awarding scholarships to full-time graduate students, based on academic merit. Recipients are selected by the award committee and submitted to the donor or its representative for approval. The amount of the scholarship is $5,000 for master’s students and $10,000 for PhD students. The number of scholarships awarded depends on available funds.

The Lise Bachand and Lionel St-Jean scholarship fund awards merit-based scholarships to graduate students based on Université de Montréal policies. The value of the scholarships depends on available funds.
Scholarships for students with specific profiles
Richard J. Schmeelk Scholarship
The Richard J. Schmeelk Scholarship was created in the mid-1980s by banker Richard J. Schmeelk to promote a shared vision of Canada as a strong, dynamic, and united country. Applicants must be Canadian citizens who have been admitted to and enrolled in a graduate program at one of four Canadian universities: Western University in London, Ontario or the University of Calgary for Francophones, and Université Laval or Université de Montréal (including its affiliated schools HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal) for Anglophones. Recipients may choose any program of study, provided they meet UdeM’s academic standards.
The scholarship is worth $20,000 per year and is renewable. More information: www.schmeelk.ca.

This fund will enable exceptionally talented young people to pursue their studies at Université de Montréal, support deserving students, contribute to their success in graduate studies, help some complete part of their studies at one of our global partner universities, and assist students in need of financial support.
Fonds de bourses mille et un métiers aux études supérieures - soutien aux étudiants en situation de handicap
This fund supports Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission by awarding scholarships to help students with disabilities pursue graduate studies. Recipients must be enrolled in a graduate program and have an excellent academic record. The number of scholarships awarded depends on available funds.
Fonds de bourses pour étudiant(e)s en provenance des États-Unis
This scholarship is awarded to students who are U.S. citizens. Recipients must be enrolled in a PhD program in the social sciences and humanities or a research master’s program in any field.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholarship Fund
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholarship Fund supports Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission by awarding scholarships to Greek students with a valid passport who are enrolled in a graduate program at UdeM. Recipients must have an excellent academic record, be proficient in French and demonstrate financial need. The scholarship may be combined with others but any other amounts received will be deducted from it.
Scholarships for students in specific programs
Bourses d'excellence Hydro-Québec
Hydro-Québec merit-based scholarships are worth $10,000 at the master’s level and $20,000 at the doctoral level. Recipients must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled full-time in one of the following programs: environmental design, urban planning, e-commerce, law, business law, information technology law, industrial relations, biochemistry, biology, computer science, physics and statistics or environment and sustainable development.
Master’s scholarships may be renewed once and doctoral scholarships twice. Students receiving remuneration from the budget of a research chair funded by Hydro-Québec are not eligible.
Hydro-Québec scholarships are awarded under an agreement reached in connection with the “Campus Montréal: Talents with a Global Reach” fundraising campaign.
Bourses d'excellence Rosdev
The Rosdev Excellence Scholarship is awarded to students in fields of study related to the environment, including law, applied science, education, environmental design, political science, and arts and letters.
Fonds Bechtel
Bechtel scholarships are awarded alternately to students at HEC Montréal, Université de Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal. Recipients must be PhD students enrolled in a technology management program at HEC Montréal, a biology program at Université de Montréal or an engineering program at Polytechnique Montréal. The number and value of scholarships awarded depends on available funds.
Fonds de bourses Banque Nationale
National Bank scholarships support Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission and promote university education in the sciences. Recipients must be Canadian citizens enrolled full-time in a master’s program in one of the following fields in the Faculty of Arts and Science: chemistry, geography, computer science and operations research, mathematics and statistics, physics or biological sciences.
National Bank scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit. Applicants must have a GPA above 3.0 (B) and a recommendation from the graduate program director. They must also demonstrate a need for financial support to continue their studies. The scholarship is worth at least $5,000.
Fonds de bourse Bernard Landry
The Bernard Landry scholarship fund was endowed by Bernard Landry to help Université de Montréal fulfill its teaching and research mission. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in a doctoral program in economics, based on academic merit. Applicants must also demonstrate a need for financial support to continue their studies. The scholarship is worth $6,000.
Fonds de bourses de la Fondation J. Armand Bombardier
The J. Armand Bombardier scholarship fund supports Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission and promotes university education in the sciences by awarding scholarships to full-time students enrolled in graduate programs in one of the following fields in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences: chemistry, geography, mathematics and statistics, computer science and operations research, physics or biological sciences. The value of the scholarships depends on available funds.
Fonds de bourses Sun Life
The Sun Life scholarship fund supports Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission by awarding annual scholarships to full-time master’s students in the humanities. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have an excellent academic record. The scholarship is worth $5,000 per year and is renewable if academic results warrant. The selection of recipients is subject to approval by Sun Life.
Fonds Édouard-Montpetit
Édouard-Montpetit scholarships honour the memory of Édouard Montpetit, the founder and first dean of the Faculty of Social, Economic and Political Sciences at Université de Montréal, by promoting the development of the social sciences, economics and political science. Recipients must be enrolled in graduate studies in law or social science at Université de Montréal or be enrolled at HEC Montréal. This scholarship is awarded based on academic merit.
Fonds Arsène David
Arsène David scholarships, endowed by a bequest from Arsène David, are awarded to deserving students without financial resources who are enrolled in a program in the social sciences or humanities. The value of the scholarship varies.
Scholarships for specific areas of research
Bourse de commémoration du 6-décembre
The women’s committee of the Université de Montréal faculty union (SGPUM) and the Université de Montréal development fund have agreed to establish the December 6 commemorative scholarship in memory of the 14 female students—13 from Polytechnique and one from UdeM’s nursing program—killed on December 6, 1989. The funds raised each year by the committee will be used to support graduate students in their studies or research on violence against women.
Objective:
Increase educational opportunities for students enrolled in a graduate program at Université de Montréal.
Eligibility:
- Be enrolled in a graduate program at Université de Montréal;
- Contribute to the advancement of knowledge about violence against women.
Bourse de recherche sur l'évaluation des apprentissages
The research grant for the evaluation of learning supports students at every stage of their research, from coursework to writing.
Eligible research topics:
Evaluation practices, instruments, regulation of teaching, evaluation of subject-matter learning, diagnostic assessment of learning disorders or difficulties.
Criteria:
- Academic record
- Relevance and quality of the research project on learning evaluation.
Bourses Jacqueline-Avard
The Jacqueline Avard scholarships were established in 1998 by UdeM’s standing committee on the status of women (CPSF) to support students who distinguish themselves through excellence in research focusing on women. The scholarships are named in honour of Jacqueline Avard, an active member of the CPSF for 10 years. In addition to supporting graduate students, the Jacqueline Avard scholarships promote the development of knowledge about women’s issues and challenges in all fields of study, including health, the social sciences, the humanities, and basic and applied science.
Eligibility:
- Be enrolled in a graduate research program at Université de Montréal;
- Have an excellent academic record;
- Contribute to the advancement of knowledge about the status of women in various fields of research.
Bourses Robert-Bourassa en études européennes
The Robert Bourassa scholarships in European studies were established in honour of Robert Bourassa, statesman and academic. A graduate of Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Law, he served as Premier of Quebec for a total of approximately 15 years. After his political career, he returned to UdeM as an associate professor in the Faculty of Law and senior member of the Jean Monnet Chair. Throughout his life, he had an outward-looking vision and a keen interest in international matters, particularly European affairs.
The Robert Bourassa scholarships keep his memory alive and support students pursuing graduate studies on Europe at Université de Montréal or a European university. Recipients must be UdeM students or graduates and Canadian citizens. The number and value of scholarships awarded depends on available funds.
Fonds de bourses Fondation Lambda pour l'excellence
Lambda Foundation scholarships support Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission by promoting excellence in research on 2SLGBTQ+ people. Recipients must be full-time graduate students at UdeM. They may be studying or conducting research in any field and may be of any sexual orientation, age, gender, linguistic background, religion or culture. Their thesis, dissertation or research project must focus on 2SLGBTQ+ people, including their communities, values, achievements, arts and sports, as well as policy and human rights issues that affect them.
Recipients must have an excellent academic record and be willing to attend a reception or meeting of the Lambda Foundation. The value of the annual scholarship is at least $1,000, depending on available funds.
Fonds Georges Wilfrid (Alfred) Michaud (multiple donors and estates)
The Georges Wilfrid (Alfred) Michaud scholarships support students enrolled in a doctoral program at Université de Montréal. The donor outlined two areas of focus for funding: epilepsy, which has affected her family, and music, which plays an important role in the lives of some family members. The Michaud scholarships therefore support PhD candidates conducting research on epilepsy or enrolled in a performance program in the Faculty of Music. The field of musical studies is left open but it is desirable that it include works by composers from the 17th, 18th and/or 19th centuries. Both instrumentalists and vocalists are eligible. The fund aims to award a minimum of two scholarships annually. Selection is based on the policies in effect at Université de Montréal.
Fonds Isabelle Boisvenu
The Isabelle Boisvenu scholarships are named in honour of Isabelle Boisvenu, who died in a tragic accident in December 2005. She and her father, the Honourable Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu, were instrumental in founding the Association des Familles de Personnes Assassinées ou Disparues (AFPAD), an organization that advocates for families affected by murder or disappearance. The scholarships promote knowledge of the issues faced by “collateral” or “indirect” victims of homicide or criminal disappearance. The knowledge produced by the research could influence provincial and federal government policies.
The scholarship is open to graduate students in any relevant field of study that could advance knowledge of the impact of homicide, violent crime or disappearance on families.
Recipients will be selected from graduate students enrolled in a program of study related to victimology, based on the following criteria:
- Be enrolled full-time in the program;
- Have an excellent academic record;
- Have an ongoing research project in their program and have officially registered its title and objectives.
Students are eligible at all stages of their research, from project submission to writing up.
Fonds Catherine-Fradette pour des bourses d'études et de recherche en sciences biologiques et en neurologie
The Catherine Fradette fund for scholarships and research grants in biology and neurology was endowed by a bequest from Catherine Fradette, who wished to support Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission through scholarships and research grants for students enrolled in a graduate program in biological sciences or neurology who demonstrate financial need and have an excellent academic record.
Fonds Guy-Rocher
Guy Rocher, a pioneer and towering figure in the field of social sciences in Quebec, established this fund to support Université de Montréal’s teaching and research mission.
The fund awards one or more scholarships annually on a permanent basis to students enrolled in a graduate program in a field related to the social sciences who are pursuing an interdisciplinary approach. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and have an excellent academic record.
Fonds Nissan
The Nissan fund helps students experiencing financial difficulty pursue graduate studies at Université de Montréal by awarding merit-based scholarships to students with an interest in commercial relations between Canada and Japan, regardless of their field of study.
The money must be used to acquire equipment or cover part of the costs of an internship in Japan. Recipients must have an above-average GPA.
Fonds Paul-Lacoste
The Paul Lacoste fund, endowed by a bequest from Paul Lacoste, awards one merit-based scholarship annually to a graduate student in a field of study related to both law and philosophy. Other things being equal, preference is given to students who need financial assistance.
