Admission Process

1) Before Applying

Postdoctoral training is offered by faculty members or researchers at the Université de Montréal (UdeM). As part of the admission and registration process, applicants interested in pursuing postdoctoral training at the Université de Montréal are required to identify a faculty member who shares their research interests, with a view to supervision. Once a professor has been identified and approval has been obtained from the director of the academic unit (faculty/department) where the training will take place, the candidate must apply for admission to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS).

You can find professors in your field of study on the UdeM departmental websites for your discipline. Explore the faculty or department website to find out about the focus and expertise of the researchers working there.

Visit the faculty directory on the :  La recherche, or consult the page: Trouver sa direction de recherche, which offers several tips for finding the person who could supervise your postdoctoral research project.

2) Complete an Online Application Form

You must apply for admission to a Université de Montréal postdoctoral training program. Here are the steps for submitting your application:

  1. Identify the program number on the list of postdoctoral training programs;
  2. Find out about the application fees you will have to pay at the end of the online application;
  3. Complete and submit an application online;

* When the letter of the award or the funding file mentions a named fellowship outside UdeM, and the fellowship is also managed by an organization outside UdeM, it is important to ensure that the organization offering the fellowship specifies in its letter that the fellowship is awarded for postdoctoral training at UdeM.  If your funding comes from the supervisor's research funds, as a postdoctoral trainee of UdeM (employee), you do not need to upload this document.

** The Registrar's Office will also ask you to upload the following documents:

  • Birth certificate
  • Citizenship card/certificate
  • Permanent residency card

*** For international postdoctoral trainees, in certain cases, the work permit will be issued by border services upon arrival at the airport. It must be uploaded to your Synchro Academics Website (centre étudiant) as soon as you arrive in Montreal. In the meantime, you should keep your IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) acknowledgement of receipt of your work permit application.

4) Upload Required Documents

Once you've applied online, you'll receive an e-mail with your university “access code” (identification number) (usually eight digits), and a personal identification number (UNIP). The access code is your unique identifier. It can be formed by the letter “p” followed by seven digits, or by two letters followed by five digits. Combined with a UNIP password, the access code gives you access to the Université de Montréal's IT platforms and tools. This will enable you to access your Synchro Academics Website (centre étudiant) and upload the required documents. To find out how to upload documents, visit the Admission website. If you're having trouble uploading, you can watch this video (in French only).

If you have any questions about your access code and UNIP, please contact the Registrar's Office.

Please note that the Université de Montréal may, at any time during your stay, ask you to present originals or certified copies of all required documents for verification of their authenticity.

5) Review File

Your application will be reviewed by the person in charge of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) department.

Please note: only complete applications will be processed. Your application will be held back until all the documents required for its review have been received.

The application must be completed and submitted no later than 30 working days before the start of postdoctoral training. Please note that all documents must be uploaded to the file for it to be reviewed.

6) Confirmation of Admission

After receiving your uploaded documents, GPS will evaluate your application and issue a notice of decision, which you can consult by accessing your Synchro Academics Website (centre étudiant) using your access code and UNIP.

Once admitted, the GPS will register you for the duration of your postdoctoral stay.

N. B. International postdocs who receive an offer of admission must upload their work permit to their Synchro Academics Website (centre étudiant) upon arrival, so that we can finalize registration.
