Admission Requirements

The Associate Vice-Rector for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) is responsible for the admission and registration of postdoctoral trainees.

To be admitted as a postdoctoral trainee, you must:

  • Have held a research doctorate (Ph.D.) or equivalent for five (5) years or less.
  • Be recommended by a professor (the person responsible for supervising the training) and the director of the academic unit concerned.
  • Be the recipient of a grant or remuneration from the person supervising your training or from the hosting institution.
  • The postdoctoral fellow must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or hold a valid work permit for the period of his/her formation or be in the process of obtaining one for the period in question.

Please consult the Politique sur les statuts des personnes postdoctorantes à l'Université de Montréal for complete admission requirements.

Please note that admission to and registration for postdoctoral training at the University of Montreal are two separate steps. It is crucial to complete both processes in their entirety to activate your status as a postdoctoral trainee.
