Health insurance

All training and research interns must have adequate health insurance.

“Health insurance” refers to insurance that covers basic medical expenses in addition to medical expenses in the event of an accident, but not insurance that only covers medical expenses in the event of a repatriation accident.

You have the following options:

1) The Université de Montréal may ask students who already have health insurance to provide proof of this. This insurance may have been taken out in Canada or in the student's country of origin.

The Québec government has signed social security agreements with a number of countries. To find out whether your country has signed such an agreement with Quebec that will entitle you to a Quebec health insurance card, please visit the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec website.

2) If you do not have health insurance, you must obtain it from a Quebec insurer. In this case, you have two options:

  1. Take out insurance with Desjardins Financial Security:

    • The amount is determined at the beginning of each academic year (September 1) by Desjardins Financial Security and varies, depending on the year, from $75 to $100 per month.
    • To request information or a refund, please contact Desjardins Financial Security.

  2. Contact a private insurer directly and quote your residence permit to find out the appropriate insurance policy, details of coverage and premiums.

To find a private insurance company, we suggest you consult the Ombudsman Service for Life & Health Insurance website.
