Funding your success

Scholarship Office

The Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) Scholarship Office awards more than $9 million in financial assistance per year. GPS also administers many scholarships for graduate students with specific profiles on behalf of various public and private funding agencies.

The GPS Scholarship Office plays a central role in managing research scholarship opportunities at UdeM. It also informs students and the university’s units (faculties, schools, departments, programs) of internal and external scholarship competitions for their programs of study.

Cost of studies

To assess your financial situation and establish a realistic budget, go to the Registrar’s Office website for information about tuition fees, living expenses and other costs.

Funding for graduate studies

Université de Montréal, government and paragovernmental agencies, businesses and foundations all offer scholarships. Students can also work as teaching assistants, research assistants or lecturers. These positions are posted in the department or offered by professors. In addition, a number of jobs on campus are reserved for students. To view current job offers, visit Student Services’ jobs page.

For more information about funding your studies, the video “Financer ses études aux cycles supérieurs en recherche” is a good place to start. It covers sources of graduate funding, funding packages and all the scholarship-related services provided by GPS and will steer you towards the best sources of information on the scholarships for which you are eligible.

Main graduate scholarships

Below you will find information on the main types of graduate scholarships. For more details on the scholarships administered by GPS, visit the graduate scholarships page, which lists major scholarships by type of organization, level of study and semester.

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) Scholarships

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies offers a variety of scholarships to promote rapid progression to a more advanced graduate program, support students while they write a thesis or dissertation, or recognize inclusive excellence, among other things. There are several scholarships for Indigenous students.

See the graduate scholarships page for a list of major scholarships.

Scholarships for international students

UdeM tuition waiver scholarships for international students

Université de Montréal has established a UdeM tuition waiver scholarship program that covers the differential tuition fees paid by international students. See the Registrar’s Office website and the Admissions and Recruitment website for details.

Exemption from differential tuition fees, granted by the Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur

Under bilateral agreements, some countries receive a quota for exemptions from differential tuition fees for their international students. For more information, visit the website of the Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de la Science.

UdeM doctoral scholarships, in partnership with selected Chinese universities and the China Scholarship Council (CSC)

These scholarships are available to Chinese students pursuing doctoral studies at Université de Montréal. See the China Scholarship Council (CSC) website.

Merit-based scholarships for foreign students (PBEEE)

The “nature et téchnologie” section of the Fonds de recherche québécois (FRQ) administers the Programme de bourses d’excellence pour étudiants étrangers (PBEEE) for the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS).

PBEEE scholarships are awarded to international students and researchers who have been short-listed by a Quebec university and wish to undertake or continue studies or research in any field in Quebec.

Academic unit scholarships

Academic units (faculties, schools, departments, programs) have scholarship programs, some of which grant financial support scholarships.

For more information on these funding programs, please email the contact person at your academic unit.

Grants from major funding agencies

The GPS Scholarship Office administers several competitions held by federal and provincial funding agencies and oversees the selection process.

The annual competitions of some federal granting agencies, such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), are generally held in the fall.

For competitions held by provincial granting agencies, such as the “nature et technologies,” “société et culture” and “santé” sections of the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ), GPS only provides information about the scholarships. Students must apply on the FRQ website.

Before applying for a scholarship, students who plan to take paid parental leave should check the new federal and provincial government rules.

Vanier Scholarships are administered by the three federal granting agencies for the three major fields of university study: SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR. They are awarded to students who have an outstanding academic record and demonstrate exemplary citizenship. Vanier Scholarships are highly competitive and reward candidates who demonstrate strong leadership in the academic community and civil society.

For more information about competitions held by the major funding agencies, see the list on the graduate scholarships page.

Foundation scholarships

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) short-lists applicants for the Rhodes, Trudeau, Mackenzie King and Pierre Arbour foundations. These private funding agencies then make the final selection.

GPS selects the recipients of the Fondation Berthelet-Aubin scholarship, which is awarded to master’s students.
